Melilla is one of two Spanish cities in mainland Africa as well as a coastal city, surrounded by the Mediterranean on one side and Morocco on the other three sides. The Spanish enclave — along with the similar city of Ceuta — has been a site of migrant crossings for years.
Melilla and Ceuta are often seen as a gateway to Europe as illegal immigrants often try to cross over from Africa. In recent years, the Spanish government and the EU established a migrant holding site for illegals, that was destroyed today, after the illegal immigrants rebelled and violently attacked the Spanish police with stones and knives, injuring nine officers.
Spain, known for having one of the most tolerant immigration policies in Socialist Europe, accepting boatloads of illegal migrants when no other EU nation would, is no longer able to let people into Spain. The Coronavirus crisis has pulverized Spain’s economy, triggering its worst recession since the Civil War, with the complete collapse of tourism and almost no hope of a swift rebound. So things will only get worse in a country with the strictest lockdowns in Europe. The economy came to a virtual halt in March and remained paralyzed until the end of June, and with the Catalonia crisis from last year still on people’s minds, a new Spanish civil war might be right around the corner.
